Dubai: Market monitoring regarding the sale of tobacco products with the new graphic packaging will be conducted by the Ministry of Economy, local monitoring authorities at each emirate, and customs, according to the Emirates Standardisation and Metrology Authority (Esma).

All monitoring activities will be done in coordination with Esma, said Abdullah Abdul Qader Al Muaini, Director of Conformity Affairs at Esma. Speaking to Gulf News, he explained that old cigarette packs will not be allowed to be imported and the new pack will be on the market starting August 10,.

“Companies will have the chance to finish their existing stocks by December 2012. Violations will be penalised according to the Federal Law 28 for 2001 which starts from Dh30,000 and includes legal action,” said Al Muaini.
