Restructuring of sixth Cabinet sees first woman minister

The Presidential decree issued on Monday saw Shaikha Lubna Al Qasimi being appointed as the UAE’s first woman minister, with a portfolio of planning and economy.

The Presidential decree issued on Monday saw Shaikha Lubna Al Qasimi being appointed as the UAE’s first woman minister, with a portfolio of planning and economy.

This was a restructuring of the sixth Cabinet since the establishment of the UAE Federation in 1971.

The 21-member Cabinet is to be headed by His Highness Shaikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

A portfolio of Ministry of Presidential Affairs has been created, while several other ministries have been merged.

More responsibility has been given to some ministries, including Ministry of State for Supreme Council Affairs, which will also look after GCC affairs. The decree appoints Major General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan as Interior Minister.

First cabinet
The first UAE Cabinet was formed on December 9, 1971. His Highness Shaikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum was then appointed Prime Minister and Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Economy and Industry. The Cabinet comprised 20 ministers.

On December 21 the same year, Hamad Bin Saif Al Sharqi was appointed as the Minister of State in the first Cabinet change.

In the second change on February 19, 1972, Abdullah Bin Omran Taryam was appointed as Minister of Education and Ahmad Bin Sultan Al Qasimi as the Minister of Justice.

On May 2, 1972, Hammoda Bin Ali was appointed as the Minister of State for Interior Affairs. On December 24, 1973, Otaiba Abdullah Al Otaiba was appointed Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs.

Second cabinet
The second UAE Cabinet was formed and headed by Shaikh Maktoum in 1973. His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan was then appointed Deputy Prime Minister.

It was followed by a single change – Ahmad Bin Sultan Bin Saleem was appointed as the Minister of State on December 24, 1973.

Third cabinet
The third Cabinet was formed in 1977 under Shaikh Maktoum and Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Al Nahyan was appointed the Deputy Prime Minister.

Fourth cabinet
On July 1, 1979, the fourth Cabinet was formed, where Shaikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan was appointed Deputy Prime Minister. This was followed by four reshuffles.

Fifth cabinet
The fifth Cabinet was formed under Shaikh Maktoum on November 20, 1990. Shaikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan was reappointed as Deputy Prime Minister.

Sixth cabinet
In the sixth Cabinet formed on March 25, 1997, Shaikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan was again appointed the Deputy Prime Minister. On October 8, 2003, Shaikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan was also appointed Deputy Prime Minister.
