Abu Dhabi: Emirates Red Crescent is preparing for the second phase of its relief operation in Sudan to help thousands of families left homeless by flooding in several Sudanese states.

The Emirates Red Crescent initiated its aid efforts for Sudan ten days ago, through the UAE Embassy in Khartoum, as severe flash floods resulting from heavy rain hit six states claiming dozens of lives and destroying infrastructure and livelihoods.

The UAE’s humanitarian programme has already sent a delegation to the flood-hit areas, and is procuring emergency aid including shelters and food from Sudan’s local markets.

Emirates Red Crescent is following the humanitarian situation in Sudan and immediately backed the capabilities of Sudan’s Red Crescent Society during ERC’s first phase of its effort, according to Naeema Al Muhairi, RCA’s Deputy Secretary General for International Affairs. This is based on a Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU) RCA signed two years ago with the Sudanese Red Crescent to bolster their humanitarian cooperation and coordination. According to the agreement, RCA supports the logistic and supply capabilities of its Sudanese counterpart.

Between August 1 and 3, heavy rain fell in eight of Sudan’s states, resulting in flash floods. At least 36 lives have been lost and 93 people injured, with an estimated 80,000 people displaced. The floods have also destroyed infrastructure and livelihoods. Latest UN estimates suggest at least 124,790 people have been affected by the recent flooding.
