Abu Dhabi : The first Maritime Security and Surveillance Conference began yesterday at the Armed Forces Officers Club and Hotel in Abu Dhabi to address both local and regional offshore challenges and threats.

The conference opened with an introductory speech by Rear Admiral Christopher Parry CBE (Commander of the British Empire), Former Director General Development Concepts Doctrine Centre (DCDC), a think tank at the UK Ministry of Defence, and Strategic Military and Security Adviser, Clarion Events.

Parry said: "The Gulf lies at the centre of the global trade between the developing east and the developed countries of the west. The region is critical to the security, stability and prosperity of the world."

Along with the hosts, there are more than 200 delegates from countries like Qatar, Kuwait, USA, UK, Europe, India and Sri Lanka attending the conference, including experts and professionals from defence organisations.
