Abu Dhabi: Five bloggers jailed for perpetrating acts that pose a threat to the UAE's security have been granted a pardon by President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the occasion of the country's 40th National Day.
According to an official source from the Ministry of Presidential Affairs, the President has ordered the release of the five bloggers who were sentenced by the Federal Supreme Court to up to three years in jail.
Shaikh Khalifa pardoned the five bloggers, who were found guilty of threatening state security, official sources told Gulf News.
Officials said the men were among the 554 prisoners across the country who were pardoned by Shaikh Khalifa ahead of the National Day celebrations.
Among the activists are blogger Ahmad Mansour Al Shehi, who was sentenced to three years' jail, Nasser Ahmad Khalfan Bin Gaith Al Merri, economics professor who has lectured at Paris' Sorbonne university in Abu Dhabi, Fahd Salem Mohammad Salem Dalk, Hassan Ali Hassan Al Khamis and Ahmad Abdul Khaleq Ahmad, who were ordered to serve two years in jail.
