Abu Dhabi: The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied a report published in a Bahraini newspaper that said a Bahraini fishing vessel “was exposed to acts of piracy” in the UAE waters.

An official source at the ministry rejected the report published by Al Wasat on Sunday, January 24, which said the Bahrain fishing vessel Dar Al Salaam, bearing registration number 8078, came under acts of piracy in the territorial waters of the UAE on the evening of January 20.

The source added that according to investigations, the incident happened north of the border between the UAE and Iran, and not in the maritime areas of the UAE.

A statement in the report quoting the deputy head of the Bahraini fishermen’s association as saying that Bahraini fishermen were allowed to carry on fishing in the waters of the UAE was incorrect, the source added.

The source pointed out that according to Federal Law No. 19 of 1993 on the determination of the UAE’s marine areas, fishing in the UAE’s territorial waters is restricted to Emiratis only.
