Dubai: The health ministry’s anti-smoking campaign themed ‘You are smarter than to start’ was inaugurated by Shaikh Majid Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture.

The campaign targets students aged 10 to 18.

The campaign was launched after a Ministry of Health delegation visited Shaikh Majid and made a detailed presentation to him about the targets of the initiative and the special studies and statistics related to the issue.

Shaikh Majid digitally signed the campaign’s special website and viewed the digital magazine.

This campaign is part of the efforts made by the ministry to educate the public and enhance health awareness.

The campaign is considered a national initiative to reduce the consumption of tobacco by youth.

Tobacco consumption is responsible of 5 million deaths annually, or 13,000 deaths daily.

It is expected that the death toll will jump to 10 million annually by 2020.

Dr Mahmoud Fikri, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Health, said othe campaign aims at presenting positive models for the youth to emulate.

The campaign’s message will be delivered to the youth through TV, radio, cinema and social networking sites.
