Abu Dhabi: Penalties will be imposed on people who fail to register changes in marital and family status once the ID registration process is completed, said an official at the Emirates Identity department.

"People who do not inform the authorities of changes in their marital status, births or deaths of family members, residency…etc., will face payment of fines," said Dr. Ali Khouri, General Director of Emirates Identity Authority.

"The applicant or a family member must visit one of Emirates ID registration centres to update the marital status, birth or death of any of their family members," Mohammad Al Mazroui, Executive Director of the Population Register at Emirates Identity Authority told Gulf News.

Emirates ID is planning in the future to facilitate this updating procedure.

"We will work with relevant ministries and Authorities, so that applicants can update vital information without having to physically come to Emirates ID registration centres," he added.

Self service machines will be subsequently made available to allow people to make minor modifications, which can also be completed online.

The self service machines will be used for card renewal, card collection, and card PIN management. There are currently four machines under trial at registration centres in four different locations namely at Musafah, Al Wahda Mall, Al Barsha, and Sharjah. Additionally, 20 machines are planned to be operational by May 2012 in 20 locations across the UAE.

There are currently 60 registration centres across the UAE, of which 29 are linked to Abu Dhabi Centre for Preventive Medicine.
