Dubai: The man who won the biggest number of votes from Dubai in the historic FNC elections said he would be the voice of the women who did not make it to the consultative council.
Jamal Al Hai, who won 340 votes in Dubai on Monday, said that women who did not make it to the council can be assured that their issues will not be ignored.
"The laws of this country are pro-women and their situation is good, but I promise my sisters that I will support them and make sure to listen to them," he said.
Several candidates and voters in Dubai expressed shock and disappointment that none of the four elected FNC seats designated for Dubai went to women, despite the heavy and visible campaigning by some female candidates.
Dr Amal Al Qubaisi made history in Abu Dhabi on Saturday by scoring the third highest number of votes in the emirate and becoming the first woman to be elected to the council's history.
In Dubai, the eighth highest number of votes went to a woman, Ayesha Sultan. So far, Abu Dhabi remains the only emirate to have elected a woman.
