Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation donated its proceeds from the 2013 Abu Dhabi Festival to the Malala Fund for Girls’ Education — UNESCO initiative.

The Malala fund was set up in December last year after an assassination attempt on Malala Yousafzai, a 15-year-old Pakistani girl shot in the head by the Taliban for campaigning for the right to attend school in Swat area of Pakistan.

It aims to improve access to education for women and girls and to prevent them from dropping out before secondary education.

The UAE had sent a medical team and an air ambulance to transfer Malala from Pakistan to the UK where she was treated for her injuries .

“The spirit of the country inherited through its founding father the Late Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan is the root of all feelings of safety and stability to all those living in this good land. It is also a social responsibility which every one abides by to provide better circumstances for development and sustainability of giving, in addition to enhancing the values of social solidarity through education and culture.” said Hoda Al Khamis-Kanoo, founder and artistic director of Abu Dhabi Festival. Noble Peace Prize nominee, Malala also visited UAE early last week on her way to Saudi Arabia. During her stay, she had thanked the UAE government for its support to her cause.
