Abu Dhabi groceries shut down for violating rules banning sale of vegetables
Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority shut down three groceries that violated a regulation banning the sale of fruits and vegetables.
Abu Dhabi: Groceries selling vegetables and fruit in Abu Dhabi have started to feel the pain of paying poor attention to hygiene at their outlets.
The Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) has started enforcing a ban on selling vegetable and fruit in the groceries, and closed down three errant shops, a senior official told Gulf News.
"We took the extreme steps because the errant groceries did not follow hygienic standards as well," said Mohammad Jalal Al Reyaysa, Manager of Communication and Information at ADFCA.
The closed shops are Ardh Al Jazeera Grocery on Al Falah Road, Mahadar Liwa Grocery on Airport Road and Najma Al Jadeda Grocery on Al Nasr Road, he said.
"We have been warning the groceries to follow the regulation," said Al Reyaysa. The fruit and vegetable kept among a number of other items within a small space will cause cross contamination, said Al Reyaysa. Most groceries stopped the practice following the warning, but some others remained defiant, he added.
"We have been taking action against errant outlets and imposed the penalties like fine as per the law," said Al Reyaysa. "Only the serious violators faced closure."
He said only large shops like supermarkets, which have enough space to keep the vegetables and fruit at a safe distance from other foodstuff and related products to avoid cross contamination, will be allowed to stock the items.
"Most groceries cannot afford to keep them safely due to space constraints," the official pointed out. He requested the public to report such violations to Abu Dhabi Government toll free number: 800555.
