Abu Dhabi: After test-launching a new user-friendly online application form, about 750,000 people used it to apply for and renew their ID cards in January and February, a top official told Gulf News on Tuesday.

“It was a pilot project in cooperation with a few big typing services companies,” said Dr Ali Al Khoury, Director General of Emirates Identity Authority (Emirates ID) .

This new online application will soon be upgraded further to make the registration process even easier, he said.

“Once upgraded we will officially launch it for companies and individuals to use it online at the comfort of their own place without visiting the typing centres,” Al Khoury said.

He said the new form will support the authority’s move to make sponsors bear the costs of ID cards of their expatriate employers.

“Employers can apply for or renew the cards of their staff by opening an online account,” the official said.

The new application form has been developed by the authority itself without the help of any external agencies, he said.

It will bear many more convenient features that will be announced after its upgrade, Al Khoury said.
