Youngster run over crossing road in Umm Al Quwain
Umm Al Quwain: A four-year-old Omani girl was killed after being struck in a road accident on Shaikh Rashid Bin Ahmad Al Mualla Road in Umm Al Quwain, according to the police.
Colonel Mohammad Al Beirq, Director of Police Operation Policies in Umm Al Quwain, confirmed the girl, 4, suffered serious physical injuries when she was hit by a vehicle while crossing the street. However, she succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.
The girl, identified as Sh.H., met with the accident around 8pm on Wednesday near Shaikh Zayed park where she was visiting with her family’s housemaid and siblings.
Police said the housemaid exited Shaikh Zayed park to hail a taxi that stopped on the opposite side of the street and as they crossed, the accident occurred.
She was struck by a four-wheel drive vehicle driven by an Emirati motorist identified as A.R., 26, police said.
Police believe the motorist ignored the safety regulations and did not pay attention to the road but noted the child did not cross in a designated pedestrian zebra crossing.
The driver, meanwhile, was arrested and referred to public prosecution.
Colonel Al Beirq urged all road users to adhere to the speed limits and pay extra attention to the road while driving in the interest of preserving child safety.
He also urged pedestrians to cross streets on designated crossing area only.
