Thunderstorms expected over UAE
Tropical cyclone Gonu is expected to enter parts of the UAE on Wednesday, generating thunderstorms, heavy rain, and high winds almost all over the country.
Al Ain: Tropical cyclone Gonu is expected to enter parts of the UAE on Wednesday, generating thunderstorms, heavy rain, and high winds almost all over the country.
Winds are expected to gust at 100 kilometre per hour (around 50 knots) when the cyclone enters the UAE, said a senior meteorologist at the UAE Met Department.
It will gradually lose its intensity over land, becoming a tropical depression with less winds speeds less than 63 kilometre per hour.
The UAE Meteorology Department on Tuesday reviewed the situation but stopped short of issuing an official warning. The conditions are expected to remain for at least three days.
A meteorologist told Gulf News that people should be alert particularly in Fujairah and hilly areas as a threat of flash floods cannot be ruled out.
"We are constantly monitoring the situation and will possibly be issuing a weather alert on Thursday," he said.
The cyclone originated from the Indian Ocean. The winds would generate waves as high as eight to 10 feet in sea, he said, warning fishermen and people to stay away from the sea.
"We are also expecting heavy rain almost all over the UAE between Thursday and Saturday evening," he said.
