Speculations rife as Dibba Municipality tries to find out cause of dead fish washing up on shore

Dibba: Health inspectors are trying to find out why thousands of dead fish washed up on shore near Dibba on Saturday, Engineer Hassan Al Yamahy, Dibba Municipality director, said.
Civic teams cleaned up the beaches near Dibba and health inspectors took some samples for further tests to determine the cause of the deaths.
Al Yamahy suspects that the dead fish could have been victims of the natural ‘Red tide' or ‘Algal bloom' phenomenon, which occurs from time to time, last appearing in Dibba Al Hosn two weeks ago.
The event happens when algae accumulates rapidly in the water and can often result in depleting oxygen in the water or producing natural toxins.
Al Yamahi said he could not comment on reports suggesting that the latest mass deaths of fish were a result of a passing ship dumping chemical fluids into the sea, and said it was mere “speculation at this juncture''.
He said most of the dead fish is still out in the open sea but does not expect more of them to wash-up on the shores of Dibba again.
