Dubai: The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is conducting a study to reduce energy consumption in all its facilities and use environmentally friendly energy sources in order to preserve the natural resources of the UAE.
Adnan Al Hamadi, Head of the RTA Energy Rationalisation Committee, said the RTA formed a special committee to help conserve natural and environmental resources in the UAE, and to boost the RTA's contribution to international environmental activities.
"The RTA is seeking to upgrade the quality of taps and street lamps to achieve further rationalisation.
"The RTA staged an employee education programme and presented a film titled The Bitter Reality. Viewers were introduced to environmental risks and catastrophes resulting from the misuse of energy sources and the failure to preserve the environment. They were shown the best ways to conserve these resources.
Celebrations
"The drive by the RTA to rationalise energy usage and use environmentally friendly sources coincides with the International Environment Day celebrations.
"It shows the RTA's efforts to conserve the environment and improve public health, and to promote sustainable environmental safety practices," he said.
The RTA published flyers containing environmental information and guidelines of rationalisation practices.
"The RTA committee also aims to convert all RTA premises and facilities into green buildings. Specialised companies have been invited to engage in partnerships with the RTA to build a cleaner environment.
"The RTA was keen to use environmentally friendly sources in its fleet of public buses and taxis early on, and is now exploring optimum practices to reduce consumption.
"A number of meetings were held with Dewa to explore ways of rationalising consumption.
"The RTA is considering replacing its existing lighting cables with other environmentally friendly ones. The RTA is seeking to promote awareness among employees and the public of the importance of saving energy, and provide them with added environmental information through the RTA Magazine and Salama Magazine for kids, the RTA web portal and leaflets," added Al Hamadi.
[The drive] shows the RTA's efforts to conserve the environment and improve public health."
