Readers stick with pets - green or not

Dubai: Gulf News readers will do "pretty much anything" to keep their pets.

They were reacting to a recent study from New Zealand that said pets are twice as damaging to the environment as a four-wheel drive.

Zeus Azusa Shiraki, an Abu Dhabi-based Japanese expatriate, said that she would keep her elderly Labrador at all costs.

"This study is ridiculous! What about the amount of unnecessary junk food eaten by people every year? There's so much waste when it comes to human food, but dog food is hardly ever wasted, especially with my dog! But if it helps the environment, I'd be happy to switch from dog food to a rice-and-meat diet for my dog," she said.

Insensitivity

Jerry Selayro, another dog owner, was also willing to go to any lengths to keep Cache, his Japanese Spitz. While he refused to accept that his dog was more damaging to the environment than a car, he employs many green practices to balance out any damage Cache may be doing.

"Of course, my one plastic rule is applied anywhere I go, which means when I go to the supermarket, I only use one plastic bag. And when I go to parties, I am known as the ‘doggie-bag' person. I take waste bones and leftover food and give it to the dogs — someone else's waste, a dog's glory."

Humaira Faisal, a Dubai-based Pakistani expatriate, felt that the study was yet another sign of increasing materialism and insensitivity in society.

"I have two kittens and when I come home, they come to me and ask for their share of love, just like children. For pet owners, animals aren't objects, they become part of the family. I really wonder how people can compare them to cars, simply based on carbon footprint!"

Samantha Samuel, a proud owner of a dog and 22 fish, agreed. Her meals are coordinated with those of her pets, and she is used to the regular "big, sloppy kiss" from her dog, whenever she greets him.

"My daily schedule revolves around them and while some may find that awkward, they don't realise that a pet becomes more and more human as time passes."

She argued pets have been with people forever, and the problems started not with the pets, but right after machines made an entry.

"You could give unconditional love to your car. But only a dog would give that back to you. That's something to think about."

However, an online gulfnews.com poll on the same issue offered some interesting results — 47 per cent were willing to give up their pet to save the environment.

"We have to think about people first. If not having a pet means a better planet, so be it!" added Kamran Hussain, a Dubai-based reader.

In spotlight: Poll results

Research shows pets have a bigger carbon footprint than cars. If I had to choose, I would give up my:

  • Pet - 47%
  • Car - 18%
  • Neither - 35%

Would you leave your pet to save the environment? What is your take on the results of the study?

Back in India we had a pet dog who was with us for more than 11 years. We never fed him dog food. His diet was usually what we would be cooking for our family members- rice, curry, egg.So if the pet owners were to resort to home cooked food for their pets how could they increase the carbon expulsion into the environment? Isn't it our duty to ensure that the pets have environment friendly food?I think it is lame to blame the pets for the owners lack of interest in giving their pets good balanced diets.

I am an animal lover and I have a dog too. I agree that pets may be harmful to the environment but we cant abandon, abuse or do something like a pest control. we have our own problems and we can solve our green issues first. we say that their carbon footprint is harmful to the environment I agree maybe but they pollute the environment unknowingly and they make up for it too in many ways. we know we pollute the environment and still we continue polluting it. we speak but don't do anything plus instead of removing pets if we are so intelligent cant we help them? they do so many things for us and we do too. we are kind of selfish to think we may be intelligent but we are still God’s creatures and so are animals

Never heard such nonsense! I will never give up my pets. People should reconsider the real facts and see that what really damage the environment are our bad habits, the misuse of resources and the absence of an objective and simple plan of education from the governments. Plus new rules to the industries should also be applied! Nature and animals are always suffering from our mistakes and it is a huge crime. We are still in time to review our concepts and change the opportunists and corrupted mentality of our system. It is time to educate and create laws for a better world! Kindly help those inoffensive and vulnerable ones who are not able to talk to have dignity. Please give more support about the end of animal commerce and keep helping more and more the animal lovers who are working hard collecting and relocating abandoned animals.

people who agree to give up pet are those who never had a pet or never been with one, what they knows about pet and their love (unconditional) towards us -selfish humans. because of our attitude and ignorance we created the mess of global littering.

Standard human reaction: We destroyed the planet with our revolution, but PETS are guilty! How easy and convenient! I am not a selfish person who believed everything without thinking. We, humans, are the problem, let’s work to find a final solution and stop blaming the rest of the species!

I have not read the so called study regarding pets being harmful to the environment. But, I have one thing to say. If our pets are by any means harmful to our environment, then could someone PLEASE explain this to me. Why on earth, do we all work so hard saving our planets' wild life from extensions? Please let me remind people out there, all our domesticated animals (including: cows, horses, chickens, camels and many more animals), were once wild creatures. I worked in the animal feed industry for many years, and let me tell you what goes into the feed is biodegradable. For the sake of an argument - Who uses fertiliser in their garden? What does NATURAL fertiliser consist of? Cow dung, camel dung. So, unless I have picked up on the wrong side of this ridiculous and outrageous argument, please someone explain the results of the research! I can't help but think that humans are driven by greed and total selfishness. What ever happened to the good old saying, 'A Dog is a man's best friend'? Also, let me remind you all, how many animals are used in the world for the entertainment of us humans ? How many animals are used to HELP us humans? Let me point out just a few - Dogs, for the blind. Dogs for security and what about all the other animals used to HELP the handicapped? Please do tell me - What would become of the blind, the handicapped and our security threats? For the record, I will love and treasure all my animals!

This is insane! Humans are the number one waste producers!! I cant believe how insensitive some people can be! "We have to think about people first. If not having a pet means a better planet, so be it!" added Kamran Hussain, a Dubai-based reader. - And this comment?! look at yourself first! Who’s the bigger waste producer? You or the animal?

This is very inconclusive. So the study wants people to kills pets to save the environment?

This message is meant for Kamran Hussain watch what you are saying as the Almighty never created these animals to damage this earth. People invented machines that cause all the mess we are in, not just that but people also cause litter everywhere look at our beaches, our parks and the rules of do not litter everywhere and yet we do litter yet we throw food, plastic bags, charcoals, cigarette butts, bottle cans, I dont think the pets do that, WE DO! It’s in our hands, its our fault not theirs! Think twice before you talk irresponsibly. I could mention thousands of things that WE people do that causes damage to the environment every single minute. Pets and animals are innocent from all this!
