Quality of Dubai’s air is good

Municipality comes out with report on environment

Dubai: No major cases of pollution were reported in Dubai last year and the general quality of air is good, according to a report on environment conditions in the emirate by the Dubai Municipality.

The report studied water, air and soil of Dubai and also analysed waste management, sewage, coastal zones, waterways , biodiversity, marine environment and climate of the region.

It will be used to support policy makers in framing plans to pursue sustainable policies, said Hamdan Al Shaer, Head of the Environment Department, Dubai Municipality.

Majority of the industrial units abided by the environment-related rules and regulations and no major issues were reported, according to the report. It also stated that the general quality of creek water was also good.

However, it identified high quantity of waste generation as one of the areas requiring attention. Dubai generates

an average of 7,000 tonnes of municipal waste is generated everyday in Dubai and each person contributes about 2.7 kilograms to it. However, the municipality is taking measures to tackle the issue and recycling 100 per cent waste and sending zero waste to landfills in the coming 20 years is one of the key agendas.

The report has been prepared in consultation with various departments. “The report is mainly intended to be presented before concerned authorities to help them frame policies and making laws and regulations accordingly” said Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General, Dubai Municipality.
