Abu Dhabi: More than one in seven residents in Abu Dhabi emirate never switch off their air-conditioning, even in winter. And a third of the population in the emirate usually or always keep the tap running while brushing their teeth.

These are some of the flip-sides which were revealed in the Environment Awareness and Behaviour Survey conducted by the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD).

The EAD said although the level of environmental awareness has risen rapidly over the past three years, more needed to be done to support changes in behaviour.

About 45.3 per cent of the residents also said they took long showers (longer than 10 minutes) most or all of the time — an increase from the previous year. Also on the downside, fewer people than before believe car use is a serious issue, 22 per cent in 2010 compared to 31.1 per cent in 2009. About 13.9 per cent said in 2010 they would reduce their car use, down from 33.6 per cent in 2009.
