Dubai: Five short films will be produced about the red date palm weevil by the Ministry of Environment and Water.

The film production will be accompanied by five radio recordings on the topic, which will be aired on local media outlets to introduce community members to the hazards of this insect.

The programmes also call for unifying all efforts to fight the insect through various vital combat methods used by the ministry.

This phase is in line with the media plan approved by the National Committee for Combating the red date palm weevil, in addition to other media publications, reports, and guide booklets.

The campaign's success will depend on many factors such as the compliance of farmers in applying the campaign's guidelines, the field combat campaigns in farms, with an organised supervision, follow up and cooperation with the official ministry departments.

A work plan has been set by the campaign's supervisors in different locations around the UAE, and the preparations have included marking the locations hit and infected with the red date palm weevil, including abandoned farms.

Affected areas

The studies have also included water sources, their salinity and devising plans to cover all those areas.

The technical teams, put together for the campaign, have covered and marked all the affected areas and set up pheromone traps that are used to control the weevil.

Trees are also treated on the premises by the application of pesticide phostoxin tablets.
