Abu Dhabi: Khalifa International Date Palm Award has called for applications for the 2011 edition of the award, organizers announced at a press conference in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

The award was  established in 2008 as an appreciation from President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan to the palm tree and the people associated with its farming either in the UAE or anywhere else in the world.

The award recognizes outstanding efforts made for the sustainable development of date palm for present and future generations.

“We will  accept  the applications from June 1, Tuesday to October 2010”,  Dr. Abdelouahhab Zaid, the secretary general of the award said.

All farmers, producers, researchers, academics, specialists and date palm lovers worldwide can submit the applications to win one of the five prizes namely distinguished research or studies, distinguished producers, the best new technique, the best development project and distinguished figure, he said.

The winners will be announced in February 2011 and the awards will be presented in March 2011, he said.
