Abu Dhabi: Increased awareness and installing GPS (Global Positioning System) devices in waste collection trucks to track them have minimised number of illegal waste dumping in the emirate, the Centre of Waste Management — Abu Dhabi said on Monday.

About 1950 cases were reported in the emirate last year — 743 in Abu Dhabi region, 673 in Al Ain and 534 in the Western Region. But this year only 980 cases were reported so far — 402 in Abu Dhabi region, 151 in Al Ain and 427 in the Western Region.

Out of more than 4,300 waste collection trucks in the emirate 4,200 have been installed with GPS device. All trucks will be installed with GPS device very soon.

The centre aims to reduce the waste generation in the emirate through environmental awareness, re-use and recycling. It aims 45 per cent reduction by the end of this year, 70 per cent reduction by 2015 and 80 per cent reduction by 2018. It is establishing an electronic database of all waste-related information in the emirate to enable monitoring and planning.

The centre also tries to minimize the final disposal of waste to landfill, using innovative practices and technologies.
