Dubai: An electronics chain is offering "instant cash" to anyone handing over their mobile phones - even if the phones don't work.

The mobiles can be deposited at Emax stores in Oasis Centre, Mall of the Emirates and Mirdif City Centre in Dubai, Arab Towers on Shaikh Hamdan street in Abu Dhabi and Emax on King Faisal Street in Sharjah, to be recycled under its "Cash for Mobiles" campaign.

Each make and model has two values - a higher amount for sets in working condition and a lower one for "non-working" units.

The "recyclable values" for the phone range are listed on www.cashformobiles.me. Visitors can also find out their mobiles' worth at the stores.

A working Nokia 6300, for example, will fetch around Dh140 (or about Dh40 if the unit is out of order.) A new set costs about Dh450 in the open retail market.

Neelesh Bhatnagar, CEO of Emax, said: "Many people in the UAE have several handsets - probably all lying in a drawer. Through this offer, we can empty our customers' drawers, give them some cash and save the environment by putting all these unused mobiles to work as recycled units."
