UN Water Scarcity Day
The UN has invited member nations to devote March 22 for implementing UN recommendations and promoting activities within their countries to conserve water. Each year, one of the various UN agencies takes the lead in promoting and co-ordinating international activities for the day.
Water scarcity is the theme this year and activities include the launch of 'Tap Project' in the US. This project asks patrons of New York City restaurants to donate Dh3.67 ($1) for drinking water that is usually free of charge.
The UN General Assembly also declared the year 2008 as International Year of Sanitation. The goal is to raise awareness and accelerate progress towards the Millennium Development Goal target to reduce the proportion of people without access to basic sanitation by 2015.
