Dubai: Members of the Desert Lions Off Road Academy, a subgroup of the Hobbies Club, toured popular camping routes at Al Melaiha and Al Warqaa last weekend to create awareness about protecting the desert.

They distributed educational brochures and information material on the necessity of sustainable environmental practices in the country's desert.

The initiative forms part of the Desert Environment Protection Campaign 2010 that runs from January 1 to March 3.

Organised by Dubai Municipality in collaboration with the Hobbies Club, in coordination with the Ministry of Environment and Water, this year's campaign aims to increase awareness among the public, particularly desert campers, of the importance of preserving the desert environment.

Arif Bin Ali Al Abbar, managing director of the Hobbies Club and chairman of the Desert Environment Protection Campaign 2010, said: "The desert environment is both the largest natural environment in the UAE and the environment closely related to our tradition and heritage.

"We should be involved in efforts to preserve this heritage, raise environmental awareness and protect our deserts by developing partnerships with different community groups."
