Sharjah: Waste collection and transport vehicles have started using low sulphur diesel in a bid to reduce the carbon footprint in Sharjah. Tandeef, the waste collection division of the environmental and waste management company Bee’ah said the initiative aims to help decrease the amounts of emissions produced while saving thousands of dirhams a year in vehicle maintenance costs.

Khalid Al Huraimel, chief executive officer of Bee’ah, said the global industry is moving towards sourcing renewable and biofuel technology to help improve the carbon footprint. “At Bee’ah, we have always opted for cleaner fuel since the inception of Tandeef in January 2010,” he stressed.
Announcing that Dh60 million was being invested in new equipment for street cleaning and waste collection in the city of Sharjah last month, Bee’ah is also using GPS vehicle tracking and computerised route-optimisation systems to maximise vehicle service productivity. The new systems develop more efficient routes for waste collection therefore reducing the environmental impact due to emissions from excess fuel consumption.
