Abu Dhabi: The Centre of Waste Management- Abu Dhabi was continuing yesterday evening to remove sand accumulated on the streets and neighbourhoods during the sandstorm on Saturday and Sunday, although all other debris has been removed.

“Removing the sand accumulated on streets and bridges was still going on by yesterday evening but we expect to complete the work soon,” an official spokesperson of the centre told Gulf News yesterday.

The centre has removed 20 tonnes of sand from one of the main bridges, she said.

Almost all other debris from the sandstorm has been removed from all the streets and neighbourhoods, she said.

When the inclement weather conditions set in, the centre asked contracted service providers in all sectors to dispatch emergency teams consisting of supervisors and cleaning workers with the necessary machinery and equipment. The teams swung into action to sweep the public roads round the clock. To prevent accumulation of waste in waste bins on the streets, the centre had asked the contractors to make arrangements for collecting increased volumes of waste.

The emergency teams were provided with enough equipment such as cranes to remove fallen trees and plants.

The centre had also deployed more inspectors who worked round the clock to follow up and oversee field work during the bad weather. They are supervising the removal of sand from all the streets — especially on main and secondary roads.

The centre made arrangements to collect the increased volumes of waste in industrial areas. There was involvement from other authorities to deal with the situation, the spokesperson said.
