Ras Al Khaimah:  The RAK Municipality announced on Tuesday it seized and destroyed more than 7.5 tonnes of foodstuff found unfit for human consumption last year.

The municipal inspectors also seized three tonnes of rotten and expired meat products during the year.

Adel Ali Al Deek, who heads the Environmental and Public Health Department at the RAK Municipality, said the municipal inspectors seized and destroyed 7,649kg of stale foodstuff during the year.

Al Deek said the municipal inspectors conducted 2,474 inspection campaigns during that year, and 14,745 shops were searched for unfit foodstuff.

He said the municipal inspectors found violations by 2,167 shops of which 15 have been shut down. Another 503 shops were slaped fines, and 833 shops issued official warnings.

Some 1,000 shops have also been forced to sign official undertakings.

He added that 1,710 samples have been collected from suspect shops and dispatched to the laboratory for analysis.

Al Deek said the RAK Municipality has been extremely strict with slaughtering of animals and restricted that activity to the slaughterhouses.
