Dubai: Almost 500 students at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) graduated yesterday in the presence of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah and Founder and President of AUS.

The commencement ceremony was also attended by Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, and Shaikh Abdullah Bin Salim Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah.

A total of 492 students graduated. Among the cohort, 437 were undergraduates, 214 were female students and 81 UAE nationals.

The College of Engineering produced the most graduates with 269 undergraduate and graduate students.

Dr Shaikh Sultan commended the graduating students for being "the model of the educated youth of this generation".

"You are our real fortune and our future. You will be turning the wheel of our future development. I urge you to bear this responsibility with honesty and integrity, and to build upon and preserve the achievements of those who graduated before you," he said.

Dr Shaikh Sultan said the university is in a phase of development and expansion. It recently signed several agreements with various sectors in society including a new initiative of cooperation with selected schools. AUS Chancellor Dr Peter Heath congratulated the graduates. "For all of you, this achievement has taken years .... We are certain that through your hard work and with your participation ... you have attained the requisite knowledge ... in whatever profession or endeavour that you choose to pursue."
