Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council member and ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah today morning unveiled the commemorative plate to mark the opening of the new library for female students at the University of Sharjah. Dr. Sheikh Sultan was received upon arrival by Dr. Amr Abdel-Hamid, Advisor to H.H for Higher Education, Dr. Samy Mahmoud, Director of the University of Sharjah, and a number of faculty members and administrative staff. Sharjah: His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah and President of University of Sharjah, yesterday unveiled the commemorative plaque marking the inauguration of the new library for female students.

Dr Shaikh Sultan also inaugurated the fine arts exhibition being held in one of the new library’s halls. The exhibition hosts almost 25 works and designs of students.

On his arrival, Dr Shaikh Sultan was received by Dr Sami Mahmoud, Chancellor, Dr Amr Abdul Hamid, Shaikh Sultan’s Adviser for Higher Education Affairs, and the university’s administrative and teaching staff.

Dr Shaikh Sultan toured various sections of the three storey library, which was set up over 10,000 cubic metres and has a capacity for one million books. The library houses 103,033 books and 87,000 e-books, 239,573 volumes s, 1,000 published periodicals and 41,000 e-periodicals, 10 million scientific articles and 1.6 million e-theses.

Dr Shaikh Sultan was briefed by Qasem Al Khalidi, head of Libraries at the university, about the available physical and electronic copies of books and reference works included in the library. Shaikh Sultan was also briefed on the system for borrowing books, and methods and tools used by the library to interact with students and faculty.

He toured the various facilities provided to students, such as cafeterias, lecture halls and others. The library also provides a wireless connection service for students, has conference, meeting and seminar halls, a prayer room, a café, a section designated for university faculty, and round the clock security surveillance.
