Nahyan unveils sculptures

Abu Dhabi The six-week Abu Dhabi International Sculpture Symposium (ADISS) concluded last week during a ceremony held at the Armed Forces Officers Club. During the closing ceremony, Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and President of Zayed University, unveiled 17 pieces of art which were designed by the 17 world-renowned contemporary artists who participated in ADISS. The artists transformed large huge blocks of marble, granite and other preferred materials such as steel and stainless steel into the final distinguished pieces of art. Shaikh Nahyan stressed the importance of promoting artistic values that will help further affirm Abu Dhabi's position as a new beacon and top destination for the arts in the Middle East region.

 Global Day held at Sharjah varsity

Sharjah The American University of Sharjah (AUS) kicked off its twelfth Annual Global Day last week with Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurating the two-day event. He toured the various pavilions and met the student cultural club members. Shaikh Sultan praised AUS and its students for the various cultural activities the students organised and recognised the hard work they had put into building the cultural pavilions.

 AUS wins moot court competition

Sharjah: A team from American University of Sharjah (AUS) emerged victorious at the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competitions held recently in Washington. AUS students Nora Ali Bakhsh, Erini Fahim, Tania Gupta, Reem Al Khalifa and Anthony Tchilinguirian comprised the only undergraduate team out of 125 teams from 76 countries that competed in the event.

Maktoum foundation hosts students

Dubai The Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation recently hosted a group of 15 MBA students from the Saeed Business School at Oxford University, on a global study trip to the UAE. The guests were received by Sultan Lootah, Executive Director for Entrepreneurship Development and Sa'ad Abbas, Acting Director for Human Capital Development at the Foundation. The students were briefed about the Foundation, its strategy and programmes under Human Capital Development. Lootah said: "We are glad to host students from a well-respected academic institution such as Oxford University. During the visit, we focused on possible areas of collaboration, especially in knowledge-intensive sectors that may require support from leading educational institutions."

Emiratisation drive

Dubai Dr Jasem Al Ali, an Emiratisation expert, said that government needs to actively collaborate with the private sector to devise ways to employ and retain Emiratis, in order to rectify the current imbalance in a sector that employs just 1 per cent of them. Delivering a guest lecture on "Structural Challenges to Emiratisation" at the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD), Al Ali, Director of Human Resources at the Department of Economic Development, Dubai, said a quota system was not an effective way to tackle the complex issue, as it could backfire by way of flight of companies to other countries.

Duke students look at UAE business

Dubai Emirates National Oil Company (Enoc) recently hosted a delegation of 30 MBA students from Duke University to provide them with an overview of the UAE's business dynamics as well as its socio-political and cultural environment. Senior management from Enoc discussed various aspects of the company, including its history, operations and new business opportunities.
