Zayed University revealed that more than 600 students have expressed an interest in Asian languages this year with Korean and Chinese most in demand
Abu Dhabi: As the economic might of the East increases, savvy students are strengthening their ties with the region by learning about its languages and culture.
Zayed University (ZU) revealed that more than 600 students have expressed an interest in Asian languages this year with Korean and Chinese most in demand.
Anticipating the demand, ZU founded the International College in 2009 which encompasses The King Sejong (Korean) and Confucius Institutes (Chinese), said Christopher Brown, founding director of the International College at ZU.
"The rise of South Korea, China and Japan, along with the strengthening of relations between the UAE and these nations, are good reasons for ZU to help prepare the Emirati work force for their interaction with these countries."
"Giving the young people of the UAE a chance to learn about Asia will help them to distinguish themselves in a competitive job market," added Brown.
ZU's Asian language programmes also include cultural activities like film festivals, concerts, calligraphy and tea ceremonies. "I am fascinated by the history of China and the rise of this country to become a major exporter of goods to the world. So, I wanted to learn the language and culture of this great nation," said ZU student Sandra Owaida, 26.
