Abu Dhabi: An ambitious endowment fund has been launched in Zayed University here to encourage research beneficial to the UAE.

Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and President of Zayed University, yesterday announced the establishment of the Dh10-million "Bin Hamouda Endowed Chair in Public Health", marking the start of Zayed University's Endowment Fund.

The announcement was made during a signing ceremony of the Endowment Agreement held on the university's Abu Dhabi campus by Shaikh Nahyan and Faraj Ali Bin Hamouda, chairman of the Bin Hamouda Group.

Shaikh Nahyan said: "This is a very special gift to the university whose impact will endure well into the future. By funding this chair, the Bin Hamouda Group has demonstrated its willingness to participate in a productive partnership with Zayed University.

"I am confident that this partnership will help sustain the quality and vitality of education at our university. It will contribute to the success of our students and to our strong emphasis on relevant research and public service."

Bin Hamouda, Chairman of the Bin Hamouda Group said: "We have always been keen to continue in the footsteps and follow the vision of Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan in promoting teaching and research breakthroughs in the UAE."

Dr Sulaiman Al Jasem, Vice-President of Zayed University, said this initiative is the first of its kind to be launched in a federal university in the UAE. "The initiative aims to encourage other higher education institutes to follow the same approach in establishing endowed chairs that will allow the university to attract outstanding researchers and faculty members..."
