Dubai: The Dress One Million Needy Children campaign concluded with more than 2 million children clothed, double the initial target set by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Shaikh Mohammad launched the campaign last year during Ramadan, with the aim of clothing one million needy children around the world.

During a press conference held yesterday, Dr Mohammad Ateeq Al Falahi, Secretary-General of Emirates Red Crescent, which implemented the campaign, said a total of Dh122.3 million was raised.

“A total of Dh122.3 million was raised from the campaign, clothing 2.55 million needy children from 51 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America.”

Al Falahi said the campaign is part of many initiatives by Shaikh Mohammad to aid needy children around the world, by providing them with the necessary services in health and education.

“The campaign also aimed to bring people together to support and aid needy children around the world, especially during the difficult time the region is facing lately. His Highness has got us used to launching charity campaigns, especially in Ramadan, to bring happiness to needy children during the holy month and Eid,” he said.

Wider reach

In Africa, a total of 930,300 children from 21 countries were clothed at a cost of Dh57.35 million.

The African countries included Egypt, Sudan, Mauretania, Djibouti, Chad, Ghana, and Senegal, to name a few.

In Asia a total of 1.53 million children from 19 countries were clothed using Dh57.87 million of the donations. The Asian countries included Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, Palestine, Philippines, Maldives, Vietnam, Malaysia and India, to name a few.

In Europe a total of 49,559 needy children from eight countries received clothing worth Dh4.09 million. The countries included Romania, Albania, Turkey and Kosovo. In Latin America a total of Dh2.99 million was raised to clothe 38,000 children in Mexico, Brazil and Chile.

“The Emirates Red Crescent is truly honoured for being chosen to implement the campaign by His Highness,” Al Falahi said.
