Companies eager to recruit at Dubai university job fair

University of Dubai students looking for job placements at their first career fair found several opportunities

The University of Dubai's (UD) first career fair held recently at its campus has resulted in a number of students being called for follow up interviews. Many of the chosen students will be hired within the next three months officials said.

The two-day event, organised by the Internship and Career Development Centre at UD, was attended by companies such as Emirates airlines, Barclays Bank, Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), Citibank, Emirates NBD, Dubai Islamic Bank, Dubai Bank, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), Dubai Customs, Unilever, Shangri-la Hotel, Oman Insurance Company, Ershaad.ae, and Pathways Resourcing.

According to Shaikh Mohammad Bin Juma Al Maktoum, President of UD Alumni Association (UDAA), the career fair provided a great opportunity for UD students as it offered an ideal environment for prospective employers to meet UD's young graduates.

UAE job market improving

Adeel Al Amari, Emiratisation Manager of Etihad Airlines, received around 100 CVs from aspiring candidates and said about 30 among them will be called for follow up interviews in Abu Dhabi and hired immediately.

"They will receive interview calls from us in the next 45 days and once selected will be given the essential training as they do not have any experience in the aviation industry. Our focus while hiring will be on academic excellence and core competencies which they possess."

Ebrahim Ahmad, Emiratisation Manager of Emirates NBD bank, told Campus Notes he received more than 50 CVs from fresh graduates. "After my brief discussion with them I can say that 10 out of them will definitely be called in for follow-up interviews and if selected will be hired within three months' time." Most placements will be in retail banking but some graduates will also be considered for about 400 vacancies across all levels of the bank.

He added the bank offers jobs in three categories for high school students, diploma holders and bachelors degree and higher diploma holders.

Hassan Tarraf, Senior Recruitment Officer of Dubai Customs, said the organisation currently has 22 vacancies that it plans to fill immediately. However, the number of vacancies will increase by April this year.

"I have received nearly 50 CVs and I think we would be taking six or seven among them on board. However, everyone will be informed of their status. As the job market in the UAE is picking up, we will need more fresh graduates. The graduates will be strictly picked up on the basis of their academic credentials. Good communication skills will be an added advantage."

Ali Al Ali, Recruitment Coordinator of Emirates airlines, intended to hire 10 UD graduates immediately and said they will be offered job placements in the next three months. "But 85 per cent of them might be called for a follow up."

He claimed that in the aviation sector, demand for outstation area managers has remained high in the last 20 years. "However, graduates will also be considered for the airline's IT department and ground staff at Dubai airports. As the airline proposes competitive packages, graduates will definitely accept our offer," he said.
