Dubai: The results of the Grade 10 CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) exams, which will be following the grading system for the first time, will be released today.

Making a major departure from the system it has followed for many decades, the CBSE is assessing students not according to the marks they scored but giving them grades based on a nine-point scale. Grades range from A1 (excellent) to E2 (unsatisfactory) with D being the minimum passing grade.

A1 represents a score above 91, B1 denotesa percentages of 81 to 90, D denotes 33 to 40 per cent, and E1 and E2 show marks below 33 per cent.

A total of 5,149 students from 49 schools in the UAE appeared for the exam.

This is the last time, students will be appearing for the compulsory board exam in Grade 10. The board has made Grade 10 exams optional from the 2010-11 academic year.

New system

Kapil Sibal, India's human resources development minister, proposed the abolition of the Grade 10 board exam in June 2009 to reduce the stress on students and parents.

Under the new system, CBSE has introduced continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) through the year instead of a single public exam at the end of Class X.
