Dubai: Varsha Madhavnarayan Totadri is away in India writing her medical entrance examination but that was no deterrent to the jubilation at her apartment in Bur Dubai as the results of the CBSE Grade 12 exams were announced on Friday.

The Delhi Private School, Sharjah, pupil has emerged the UAE topper in the Science stream with an aggregate of 96.2 per cent.

Madhavnarayan, Varsha's father told Gulf News that his daughter has taken the news of her success without ‘hitting the ceiling though we are very much so'. "She has got a very balanced head on her shoulders and that is what we are the most proud about her," said Madhavnarayan from Chennai, who works as the general manager in the IT section of Samsung Electronics, Dubai. His wife, Suchithra is a homemaker and they have a younger son, Varun who is in Grade 9.

Varsha said she first could not believe it when she came to know her score. "96.2 per cent is quite an achievement and I did not expect to score that much. Also the competition is so tough because DPS has many brilliant pupils. But I am glad that I have made my parents and teachers happy and proud," said Varsha.

On her choice of medicine, Varsha said medical profession is one way of giving back to society and she is keen to work in the field.

It is a double honour for Delhi Private School, Sharjah because the second top pupil in the Science Stream, Manish Raje is also from DPS. He scored an aggregate of 96 per cent.

In the Commerce stream, Akshaya Kannan of Our Own English High School, Al Ain, bagged the top slot with an aggregate of 95.6 per cent closely followed by Rajeswari Sajiv Kumar of Our Own English High School, Dubai. She scored 94.6 per cent.

In humanities, Rasheeda Shabir from Indian High School Dubai emerged the topper scoring 94.8 per cent. Varsha Anil Nair from Our Own English High School Dubai came second with 92.6 per cent.

A total of 3573 pupils from 33 schools in the UAE appeared in the Board exam this year.

Results: Gulf pupils outshine those in India

With a pass percentage of 90.67, pupils from the Gulf region have outperformed their India counterparts in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) exams for class 12, the results for which were declared yesterday.

The pass percentage of pupils in India was 79.87. A total of 7,064 pupils appeared for the exams in March from 69 Indian schools in various Gulf countries like the UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

The overall pass percentage in the region recorded a marginal increase of 0.81 from last year.

This year, 699,129 pupils — 408,367 boys and 290,762 girls — took the Class 12 board exams in India and abroad.
