Abu Dhabi: The English language proficiency of the pupils in Abu Dhabi public schools is set to improve considerably, as 456 new native English-speaking teachers have joined the schools.

Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) welcomed the teachers from Australia, UK, US and Canada yesterday at a function organised at Al Afaq School.

Speaking at the four-week-long Cultural and Curriculum Orientation for the new teachers, Dr Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Director General of ADEC, said the arrival of these teachers marked an important step in the historic transformation set out in ADEC's 10-year strategic plan released in June.

Overall, 1,000 new teachers (both Arabic and native English speakers) will be recruited as part of ADEC's drive to improve education standards.

The country will soon enjoy the resources of Emirati English teachers as the universities are grooming local talent, Al Khaili told Gulf News.

To achieve high standards, ADEC has identified a need to expand proficiency in both English and Arabic.

"English is the international language of business and science and is central to Abu Dhabi achieving its vision of economic growth and diversification," said Al Khaili.
