Unlike the usual Friday mornings, the school was thronged by thousands — children who were seeking admission and their parents.

  • Parents gather to see if their children had secured a seat in the Abu Dhabi Indian School through the lottery.

Abu Dhabi: Due to a shortage of seats, the Abu Dhabi Indian School (ADIS) may go back to a shift system, taking girls in the morning and boys in the afternoon, Gulf News has learned.

"People are leaving with sad faces and this has compelled us to consider the shift system, at least until enough seats are available," school chairman B.R. Shetty told Gulf News on Friday at a lottery for seats.

Applications

More than 2,500 children applied for the 109 seats available at ADIS earlier this week, after which it was announced a lottery would be held. Approximately 66 seats were available in KG, 30 in grade one and 13 in grade two.

Sherwood Academy and Merryland Kindergarten, following the Indian curricula, are due to close by 2013, affecting close to 3,000 students.

Sherwood may be asked to extend their date of closure until an alternative situation is found to the lack of seats in Indian schools, parents suggested.

"[The] opening of a new school is the only solution," Sushma Patel, who has been seeking admission for her eight-year-old son for the past three years, said.

We all are looking to the problem that Sherwood is closing there CBSE and shifting to 'O' level. but can we all put this matter to education ministry that why Sherwood is closing CBSE as they are doing very well since almost 20-25 years and suddenly they have decided to close the CBSE, in spite they are coming up with a huge facility for 'O' level near Mussafah area. I can only judge that 'O' level very fruitful that’s why they want all the student to be 'O' level student. This is global economic crisis time and we have one more problem to mess our life with the children’s education. I am also a father of 1st grade student from Sherwood. I would like to urge for help from media and all the parents for this crisis. Lets do it.

We are one of the few blessed parents who got through the lucky draw in ADIS for our kid in KG1. We are so happy and relaxed now. Until Friday morning, i was also among those thousands of parents who are desperate and frustrated to get their kids admitted into a good school. I feel if shift system is implemented, it might solve lot of problems and it is better than sending the kids to some unwanted schools just for a compromise. My best wishes n prayers are with all the parents who are seeking admission this year for their kids in UAE.

i am one of the child’s father affected by Merryland Kindergarten in KG 2. I also attended the draw in the Indian school. I welcome the statement of B .R . SHETTY , they should force the ADEC strongly otherwise most of these Indian community parents will go back to their home country. so please do the helpful action to solve the issue. Otherwise please force the Sherwood Management to extend some other one year period until some other new schools coming in the next year.

It is nice to hear that still there is a hope for the parents who lose their big dream for their child last Friday at ADIS. All parents are waiting for an immediate action from ADIS management regarding request for shift system and the approval from the concerned department.
