Dubai: The first five months of 2014 recorded 88 road deaths, Dubai Traffic Police statistics showed.

The total number of traffic accidents recorded was 1,116 traffic accidents. Ninety people sustained serious injuries, 281 sustained moderate injuries and 529 had minor injuries in the first five months of the year, the traffic police accidents report released on Saturday showed.

The main cause of accidents was vehicle crashes with 901 cases and 62 deaths, followed by 137 cases of run-over accidents, which resulted in 18 deaths.

Underage drivers between 14-17 caused seven accidents, one death and 10 injuries, while drivers between the ages of 19-30 were involved in 266 accidents, which resulted in 49 deaths and 402 injuries.

Drivers aged 31-40 caused 177 accidents, in which 22 people died and 252 were injured and drivers who were 41 and above were involved in 121 accidents, in which 16 people were killed and 182 were injured. Reckless driving caused 68 accidents, which resulted in five deaths.

Sudden swerving caused the most damages among traffic violations. There were 238 cases of sudden swerving, which killed 31 people, and caused 27 serious injuries, 67 moderate injuries and 138 minor injuries.

Not leaving enough distance between vehicles was the second leading violation with 214 instances, killing 12 and injuring 157.

Speeding caused 26 accidents and killed six, while four were killed in accidents involving running a red light. There were 44 cases where drivers ran a red light.

Not ensuring that the road was clear before entering was recorded 88 times and caused five deaths, while four people were killed in 54 accidents that involved motorists not paying attention to the road.

Exhaustion or sleeping at the wheel caused four accidents, which led to the deaths of two people, while two people were killed and three injured in three accidents caused by vehicle tyres bursting and two accidents were caused by one of the tyres coming off the vehicle, which resulted in one death.
