Permanent fix: Residents says bollards are not enough, they want a permanent barricade Image Credit: Supplied

Dubai: The Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) has blocked a newly opened access road in Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT) close to the children’s park area following safety concerns raised by mothers living here.

The previously open access now has bollards in place to restrict unwarranted vehicles entering the park area.

In an email statement to XPRESS, DMCC said only authorised vehicles are allowed to enter the area. “Access is permitted for ‘authorised vehicles’ to service community assets including the DEWA substation and fire safety systems, and emergency services as required,” the master-developer said.

In March, some mothers from JLT told XPRESS they were concerned about the access because it was next to the children’s play area. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said it is monitoring the situation to ensure safety near the park.

“The access close to the children’s play area leads to a DEWA substation which has been there from before. Proper traffic signs will be in place to authorise only DEWA vehicles to enter the area. RTA will continue to monitor the situation on site,” said Maitha Bin Adai, CEO, TRA, RTA.

A JLT resident, however, wants more to be done. “Two bollards have been placed at the access to restrict vehicles. However, children can still run onto the main road through the gaps between the bollards. What we need is a more permanent fix like a barricade to completely block off access,” said housewife Megha Hemdev.
