Ras Al Khaimah: Ras Al Khaimah Police ended their four-month offer to reduce traffic fines by up to 50 per cent on Wednesday, said Col Ali Saeed El Kum, director of the police traffic department,

And it has no plans to extend the invitation for motorists to settle their fines at a reduced cost any time in the near future.

The original grace period started on September 10 and continued until yesterday.

Brigadier Mohammad Al Noubi, Deputy General Commander of Ras Al Khaimah Police, said the decision was taken based on the directives of His Highness Shaikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.

The general thinking behind the idea of allowing motorists to pay reduced fines is not only to encourage them to settle their fines and clear their driving records but also, in the long run, learn responsible driving because they have already paid for mistakes on the road.

When fines hit their pocket, studies have shown that drivers may be less likely in future to drive recklessly or speed knowing that bad behaviour on the nation’s nations will cost them hard-earned money.

Brig Al Noubi said the decision to grant discounts was also intended to reduce the burden on residents.

Brig Al Noubi said that the discount only included traffic violations on radar which were committed in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.
