Abu Dhabi: The Ministry of Interior's Higher Committee for Protection of Children is to develop comprehensive, coherent training, professional and academic programmes to fight the sexual exploitation and abuse of children.

Major General Nasser Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, said there was a need for educational and awareness programmes targeting children to be infused into the school syllabus given the nature of each level.

Al Nuaimi, who chairs the committee, said specialised awareness programmes would also be tailored to target guardians and educators. The top Ministry of Interior official acknowledged the critical role the media could play in delivering the committee's message and vision.

He said the committee would work with the media to raise awareness among family members and children in particular about the risks and challenges they could face in the ICT-driven (Information and Communication Technology) community.

As part of the committee's plan, Al Nuaimi highlighted the importance of convening scientific, topical conferences and conducting specialised researches, and of communicating with research centres within the UAE and overseas.

He cited the determination of Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, to provide whatever was needed to achieve the goals of the country's higher leadership, to maintain the security and safety of the local community.

He added that Shaikh Saif's directives highlighted the importance of making the UAE a world centre for excellence in the protection of children.

Towards achieving its mandate, the committee would work to create a child protection centre to handle all child-related crimes and matters related to the exploitation of children, and devise creative solutions and programmes to eradicate them.
