Dubai: A Ugandan woman, who was accused of murdering her countryman at her residence, has been jailed for three years after she claimed self-defence.

The 28-year-old Ugandan defendant, E.K., was said to have murdered her countryman, S.K., according to prosecution records, after she stabbed him in his chest with a kitchen knife.

The accused pleaded not guilty and argued that the deceased wanted to have sex with her.

“When he chased me in the flat wanting to have sex with me, I defended myself and my honour,” E.K. contended before the Dubai Court of First Instance.

Presiding judge Wajdi Al Menyawi said the defendant will be deported following the completion of her three-year imprisonment.

Signs of relief were visible on E.K.'s face when she was informed about the judgement.

She has been in custody since the incident on April 8 last year at her residence in Naif.

According to the accusation sheet, E.K. was charged with premeditated murder.

“He sat beside me and wanted to attack me. When I grabbed my phone to call for help, he snatched it and threw it away. We fought. I kicked him because he insisted on attacking me. I ran away from him into the kitchen but he chased me inside. I grabbed a knife and stabbed him once… it was self-defence. I did not intend to kill him,” E.K. told the court.

Meanwhile, her court-appointed lawyer argued that his client was subject to a brutal attack by the deceased. The lawyer contended that the woman was protecting herself and defending her pride as the victim wanted to abuse her.

A Ugandan security guard testified that S.K. saw him in front of a hypermarket and asked to drive him to Mirdif around 11am.

“I waited for him but he didn’t show up. He didn’t answer his phone as well. I walked towards the building where he stayed, and suddenly I spotted E.K. coming down with blood covering her clothes. I opened the elevator door and saw another Ugandan woman rushing out quickly. She didn’t greet me although I knew her… when I asked her why she didn’t say hello, she claimed that the defendant had stabbed the victim,” claimed the guard.

Police were summoned to the crime scene. The defendant was taken into custody after a witness heard her shouting ‘I killed him’ when she rushed out of the building.

Monday’s judgement remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
