Woman admits swallowing 25 Panadol pills after her mother and brother didn't allow her to marry
Dubai: A woman has been fined Dh1,000 for swallowing 25 Panadol pills in a suicide attempt after her parents prohibited her from marrying a man because of social differences.
The Dubai Misdemeanor Court convicted the 30-year-old Indian woman, D.B, of attempted suicide after she confessed that she tried to kill herself.
Prosecutors accused the woman, who works as a computer operator, of swallowing the Panadol pills with the intent to end her life.
Records said the incident happened when D.B.’s parents rushed her to Rashid Hospital after she tried to kill herself on September 7.
The defendant’s sister informed police that D.B. swallowed the pills and intended to kill herself after her family refused to allow her to marry her lover in India.
The sister claimed that they admitted D.B. to hospital because she suffered a severe headache and continuous vomiting.
“I was in love with a man in India. He proposed to my parents [who live in Dubai], but my brother and mother rejected him because his social class is lower than ours.
“I flew in to Dubai on a visit to convince them about our marriage. They strongly refused that we get married and they even refused to discuss the issue.
“I could not sleep because I thought so much about the issue, then I took 25 pills. Afterwards I felt very dizzy and vomited a number of times. “The next day I told my sister that I took 25 pills and she informed my mother. They rushed me to hospital,” claimed the defendant.
Meanwhile the girl’s brother testified that they rejected the marriage proposal after the man’s parents also refused.
“My sister went through a nervous and emotional breakdown after they broke up. She suffered severe depression and underwent a treatment in India. We rushed her to hospital when she felt sick here. It was the first time that she ever tried to end her life,” claimed the brother.
The primary judgment remains subject to appeal within 13 days.
