Dubai: A visitor who assaulted a driver at the latter’s home before pulling a knife and chasing him into the street has been jailed for one year.

The Dubai Court of First Instance found P.K, 37, a Sri Lankan national, guilty of assaulting his 42-year-old countryman V.V. with a stick and threatening to slit the latter’s throat with a knife.

Prosecutors charged P.K. with assaulting V.V. with a piece of wood and causing him 10 per cent permanent disability. He was also charged with holding a knife against V.V’s face and threatening to kill him.

The victim V.V. was also punished for assaulting P.K. in an earlier incident in Al Quoz. The court sentenched V.V. to one month in jail for assaulting P.K.

V.V.’s wife testified that they were asleep when P.K. broke down their bedroom door and beat her husband with a stick before pulling a knife and thrusting it in V.V’s face.

“He yelled at me to move away claiming that he wanted to kill my husband. V.V. ran out of the room and he was naked when P.K. chased him down the street. I asked a group of Arab men to help me. They stopped P.K. and called the police,” the woman said.

The court also imposed fines on the two defendants for consuming liquor.

V.V. admitted to assaulting P.K. citing “self defence”.

Prosecution records cited P.K. as confessing to the assault on V.V. and threatening to kill him.

V.V’s wife testified: “P.K. came to Dubai on a visit visa and stayed at our place. My husband, P.K. and two others sat down and consumed liquor that evening. My husband came to bed around 5:30am. Shortly after that, P.K. broke down the door and grabbed a piece of the splintered wood and attacked my husband. Then he pulled out a knife from behind his back. P.K. yelled in my face when I intervened and tried to stand up for my husband. ‘Please don’t kill him,’ I cried. P.K. removed my husband’s undergarments when he ran out of the room. My husband had to run down the street naked while P.K. chased him.”

Prosecution records said V.V’s ear was left deformed following the attack.

P.K. will be deported after serving his punishment.

Tuesday’s judgement remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
