Dubai: A Kazakh visitor has been acquitted of verbally threatening to kill a Russian investor if he did not pay him Dh3,500, a court has ruled.

The Dubai Court of First Instance dismissed the charge of verbal threat to kill which was levelled against 34-year-old Kazakh, R.K.

Presiding Judge Al Saeed Mohammad Barghout, who pronounced the primary judgment, acquitted R.K. for uncorroborated and baseless evidence.

"I am not guilty. The charges are baseless and untrue. I did not threaten the claimant," the visitor argued when he first appeared in court.

According to the charges sheet, the Public Prosecution charged R.K. with threatening to kill 42-year-old V.S. if he refused to pay.

The claimant testified before prosecutors: "The suspects called me and claimed that he was calling on behalf of a mutual friend, named D. He asked me to pay him Dh3,500 in return for the merchandise which he [the suspect] had consigned to D. He also alleged that he was D.'s partner but failed to present any document to corroborate his partnership. R.K. also claimed that he dealt with D. and another person, identified as N., and who collected the merchandise. Then he threatened to kill me if I refused to pay him the money."
