Dubai: Dubai Public Prosecution (DPP) on Tuesday launched an unprecedented e-initiative, named e-laws, making 11 laws available and freely downloadable for clients who use iPhones.

Lawyers, clients and prosecutors dealing with DPP can now remotely access 11 UAE laws at any time and from anywhere in the world, according to Yousuf Al Mutawa, DPP's First General Prosecutor.

"Our clients, including prosecutors, lawyers, customers and other members of the judicial industry have become the first across the region, to have remote, electronic and digital, access to 11 laws. E-laws, a first-of-its-kind e-initiative, applies to holders of the iPhone. It is part of our strategy and vision in adopting, implementing and rendering IT services to our clients," Al Mutawa told a media gathering.

"Imagine acquainting and introducing yourself, to laws while sitting at home or anywhere in the world… We believe that IT is a must and a vital factor in the litigation and prosecution processes. IT is vitally important and will help us develop and upgrade our e-services in court cases and administration. This new initiative was made available since two weeks, during which more than 10,000 iPhone users [from US, UAE and region] have downloaded the programme freely… today we are officially launching it," he said.

According to the new initiative, he said, DPP has made E-laws user-friendly to their clients. The laws available to be downloaded freely are Penal, Criminal Procedures, Civil Procedures, Personal Status, and International Judicial Cooperation in Criminal Matters, Anti-Human Trafficking, Anti-Narcotics, Cyber Crimes, Combating Money Laundering, Combating Terror Crimes and Traffic.

E-laws has a search engine which is friendly to the user to browse for any required information in the 11 laws. The laws and articles can also be emailed.

Al Mutawa said DPP has introduced more than 80 e-services to its clients.

"The encouragement and tremendous support of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the UAE Vice-President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, has helped us develop our electronic services and we feel responsible for adopting and catering e-services to reach excellence," he said.

Abdullah Al Merri, director of DPP's IT section, said E-laws is part of DPP's strategy to spearhead the adoption of best practices in the IT field at other prosecution departments.

Hind Zarouni, DPP's director of e-services, delivered a power-point presentation on how to download the programme from Apple Store.
