Two-year jail sentence for theft and assault

Dubai: Four men have been jailed for beating and kicking an accountant when he tried to stop them from escaping in a minibus after they stole his Dh50,000, ruled a court.
The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the Indian quartet, visitor O.P., barber A.S., worker M.R. and machine operator M.A., to two years in jail each for stealing and assaulting the victim, as charged by the Public Prosecution. The convicts will be deported after serving their jail terms.
The court decided that there was insufficient evidence to incriminate the 26-year-old Indian suspect L.K. who got acquitted.
Records said the incident happened when the 29-year-old Indian accountant, A.W., noticed four men chasing him wanting to steal the four bags of money which he collected from the textiles company where he works.
The victim said he saved two moneybags by throwing them over his villa fence but two fell outside.
Police reports said A.W. chased his attackers when they picked up the two moneybags outside of the fence and tried to escape in the minibus, which awaited them.
"The suspects walked towards me in a suspicious manner when I was carrying the moneybags around 12:30am. The suspects ran towards the bags which fell before the fence, picked them up and jumped into the minibus. I tried to stop the driver through his open window, but I failed because of the beating," testified A.W.
