Abu Dhabi: Two police officers were shot and injured while they were chasing suspected drug dealers in Bani Yas Monday. Police said they arrested the suspects.
The officers, first lieutenant and first sergeant, were taken to a public hospital.
Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, visited the officers at the hospital to inquire about their condition.
Following the shooting, police patrols rushed to the scene. Lt. Gen Shaikh Saif was closely monitoring the operation to capture the suspects.
After a tip-off, the Abu Dhabi Police Anti Narcotics Department set up a trap to arrest gang involved in trafficking of drugs, Brigadier Hammad Ahmad Al Hammadi, Director of the Anti-Narcotics Department said.
Two undercover policemen struck a deal with the two suspects, Yemeni and Emirati, to buy 20kg of hashish for Dh228,000, police allege.
Police trap
The police trap was set up in Bani Yas to capture the suspects. On the meeting point, the first suspect came walking to the vehicle that was carrying the two undercover policemen.
The suspect allegedly counted the money and then phoned his accomplice who was waiting in his car.
When the accused came to hand over the drugs and receive the money, he suspected something amiss and opened fire at the undercover policemen’s car before fleeing the scene.
The first suspect was arrested first and then police launched a hunt to capture the second, who was arrested by Frontier Guards two hours later.
Brig Al Hammadi praised vigilance of police and the continuous coordination with the Frontier Guards to ensure public safety and security
